WHAT IS THE THERMALLY FUSED LAMINATE (TFL) PLYWOOD?

Thermally Fused Laminate (TFL) Plywood  or other name Melamine plywood or Low-Pressure Laminate Plywood is a type of decorative panel that has been used for furniture and interiors for over 25 years. It is created by thermally fusing the uppermost decorative and durability layers of HPL (High Pressure Laminate) directly to the surface of a composite wood substrate. Historically, TFL product has been commonly mistaken for HPL and solid wood, veneers, and painted wood products, but over the last 5-10 years it has become increasingly popular due to its durability and the availability of matching designs to HPL, 3DL (three-dimensional laminates), edge treatments, and other materials.

Thermally fused laminate (TFL) plywood products are commonly used components for furniture and decorative panels for interiors. They consist of a decorative printed paper or solid color face that is bonded to a core of composite wood, usually particleboard, under heat and pressure. The paper is treated with a special thermosetting melamine resin system that creates a durable surface that is scratch- and wear-resistant. Most TFL panels also have embossed textures that give the printed design a realistic look and feel, making them an effective alternative to fragile and expensive veneers.

WHY CHOOSE THERMALLY FUSED LAMINATE (TFL) PLYWOOD?

Thermally Fused Laminate (TFL) Plywood products with woodgrain designs are the perfect choice for projects that require the feel of fine wood, but need to be more durable and cost-effective than veneer or actual wood. No other manmade material can replicate the look and feel of real wood as effectively as TFL Plywood. Not only is it inexpensive to produce, it is also climate-positive, meaning it is better than carbon-neutral, and utilizes wood fiber that would otherwise be thrown away or burned.

One great advantage of using TFL over solid wood or veneer is that in the event of any damage occurring to any panels, the exact color and character can be replaced, unlike with solid wood and veneer.

The faces of TFL Plywood products are thermally fused to the core, not glued, making them more durable and resistant to wear and scratches. Moreover, enhanced wear and chemical-resistant surfaces are available for extra protection. Edge treatments are essential for protecting the panel’s surface integrity, and the panel faces are also water- and moisture-resistant, unlike veneers. Special cores can be requested for additional features such as moisture and fire resistance, reduced weight, and improved screw-holding strength. All in all, TFL Plywood products are a great economical substitute for veneered wood products.

WHERE IS THERMALLY FUSED LAMINATE (TFL) PLYWOOD USED?

The decorative papers utilized in TFL and HPL are essentially the same. They are printed on these papers with either a rotogravure or digital inkjet printer and water-based inks. The printing system must be compatible to accommodate the next step, which is impregnating the paper with resins, and pressing it onto a composite wood core.

The surface can be textured with woodgrain, gloss and matte effects, as well as other textures made by engraving steel plates or utilizing textured release papers. Certain textures may be “synchronized”, meaning that the details in the woodgrain texture perfectly match the woodgrain details on the décor paper. Thermally Fused Laminate has a larger range of texture options than other manmade decoration, like deep stone and wood textures, and a raw wood feel.

Therefore, Thermally Fused Laminate (TFL) Plywood is typically used in the production of commercial and residential cabinet casework, doors, and drawer fronts, such as those found in offices, hotels, and healthcare facilities. It is also utilized for fabrication of worktops, tabletops, retail displays, shelves, walls, architectural wall panels, elevator cab wall panels, closet and storage systems, signage, and laminate flooring.
