EUDR vs EUTR vs PEFC requirements and connection

With the EUDR regulation take effect in 2026 for all forest product trading among European market, it is essential for exporters to have a clear understanding of EUTR, EUDR, and PEFC requirements. These are important regulations and certifications related to sustainability, legal sourcing, and forest protection. Let’s break them down in simple terms.

  1. What is EUTR?

EUTR stands for European Union Timber Regulation.

  • It applies to all wood products (including furniture, plywood, paper).
  • Requires companies to:
    • Know where their wood comes from (traceability).
    • Assess the risk of illegal logging.
    • Take action to reduce that risk.
  1. What is EUDR?

EUDR stands for European Union Deforestation Regulation.

  • EUDR is Expanded beyond EUTR.
  • Applies to 7 commodities: wood, cocoa, coffee, soy, palm oil, cattle, and rubber.
  • Main requirements:
    • Products must be deforestation-free.
    • Must be legally produced.
    • Must include geolocation data of the farm or forest source.

  1. What is PEFC?

PEFC stands for Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification.

  • It is a global certification system for sustainable forest management.
  • Actually, PEFC is Voluntary certification (not a law).
  • Aims to prove that wood products come from responsibly managed forests.
  • PEFC-certified products:
    • Are traceable through the supply chain.
    • Support reforestation and biodiversity.
    • Help meet EUTR and EUDR requirements.

PEFC is a tool or proof that helps show your wood is sustainable and legal.

Europe market is tightening its rules to fight deforestation and illegal logging. For Vietnam’s exporters, this is both a challenge and an opportunity:

  • Challenge: Need to improve traceability, documentation, and supplier control.
  • Opportunity: Vietnam can become a trusted supplier of sustainable, legal products by adapting early.

Being EUTR/EUDR-compliant and PEFC-certified will open more doors in the EU market and beyond.
