Vietnam Plywood Manufacturers: Glue Classifications

We have created a simple guide about glue classifications among Vietnam Plywood Manufacturers on selecting the appropriate plywood glue type and classification based on its intended use and exporting country.

1)Glue Classifications for Interior / Exterior

Class 1: Completely apply for Interior dry conditions using purpose.

Class 2: For humid conditions.

Class 3 : Exterior conditions. This refers to being exposed to adverse weather conditions for extended periods or being exposed to high levels of humidity.

2)Formaldehyde Emission standard

Some beginner in engineered wood industries may miss understanding about the E1, E2, E0 or Carb P2 is a type of glue. However, The E1, E2, and E0 glue standards are a classification system used to indicate the formaldehyde emission levels of adhesives used in wood-based panels such as plywood and particleboard.

In general, higher formaldehyde emissions are associated with increased health risks, so these standards are used to help ensure that wood-based products are safe for human use.

E1, E2 and E0 are the mainly refer to the Euro Zone standard with E0 is the highest standard, with formaldehyde emissions less than 0.5mg/L. E1 is the second highest standard, with formaldehyde emissions less than 1.5mg/L. And E2 is the lowest standard, with formaldehyde emissions less than 5.0mg/L.

While the Carb Phase 2 (equally to E0) is the current mandatory formaldehyde emission standard that applying for interior plywood or composite wood entering the US market.

It’s important to note that these standards vary by country, and some countries may have different classifications. For example, Japan developed their own classification with JAS for  plywood and composite products.

The table below will show the level of Formaldehyde emission standard in different countries.

Standard Country Classification Limitation of Formaldehyde Emission
JAS Japan F**** Max 0.4mg/L
F*** Max 0.7mg/L
F** Max 2.1mg/L
F* Max 7.0mg/L
EN Europe E0  0.05 mg/m3
E1 0.124 mg/m3
E2 0.124 mg/m3
CARB USA Phase 2 0.05 ppm
