Vietnam plywood industry has rapidly gained popularity as a major source for furniture production worldwide. Industrial wood panels are divided into four types: MFC, MDF, HDF, and plywood. This article aims to highlight the distinctions between them.

1.MFC (Melamine Faced Chipboard)

This type of material is composed of wood shavings sourced from fast-growing forest trees such as Eucalyptus, acacia, and rubber. These are then transformed into particleboard and combined with paper infused with melamine resin. The addition of the melamine layer makes the surface, resistant to scratches, and seemingly waterproof. MFC comes in various colors, is lightweight and simple to assemble. However, it cannot be made into seamless surfaces, its thickness is limited, and it is not highly resistant to water. MFC is most fitting for furnishings in dry environments and is often used for furniture items such as desks, wardrobes, and nightstands in home and office settings.

2.MDF (Medium density fiberboard)

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is a panel that is created by compressing wood fibers together, along with additives such as wax and resin binders, at high temperatures and pressures. This results in a board that has a higher density than MFC and boasts a smooth surface that is perfect for painting, gluing, and screwing. Two production methods, wet-process and dry-process, are utilized to create different variations of MDF. For instance, ultra-light MDF is commonly employed in indoor furniture like wardrobes and cabinets, while green MDF that is resistant to moisture is ideal for use in humid environments such as kitchens. Red MDF, which is fire-retardant, is typically used for office or apartment furniture.

3.HDF (High Density Fiberboard)

High Density Fiberboard, or HDF, is a durable material that is crafted from a combination of natural wood, additives, and binders. It features a smooth finish, and can withstand moisture and scratches. HDF is highly robust, allowing for secure attachment of nails and screws, making it an excellent choice for long-lasting furniture, such as kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, and office counters. In addition, it is commonly used in the production of laminate flooring. However, HDF is considered a premium material, with a higher cost than other woods like MDF and MFC.

4.Plywood

Plywood is made by gluing thin sheets of wood, known as plies or wood veneers, crosswise along the grain. The quality of plywood depends on its intended use and the type of wood species it uses. Vietnam Plywood materials are mainly Acacia, Eucalyptus and Rubber. Compared to MFD and MFC, plywood has superior water resistance capabilities. It is commonly used in construction, both indoors and outdoors, as well as for furniture such as sets, cabinets, and tables. Due to its high strength, plywood is typically preferred in applications that require stability.

5. What is the best solution

It ultimately depends on what you are constructing and the circumstances under which the material will be utilized. For cabinet creation, you have the choice of any four of these wood composites. The majority of individuals tend to select plywood for the cabinet frame because it has the ability to hold screws well and can be stained or painted with ease. Due to the multiple wood layers, plywood-built cabinets are light in weight, yet remain durable and strong. Conversely, if constructing a shelving unit, MDF could be selected to save money. In essence, various forms of manufactured wood can be employed for a multitude of projects, but always consider weight, the strength of the material, the ease of clean cutting, and the likelihood of water damage.
