Engineered Floor base: Plywood vs. HDF – Which is Best?

Engineered floor is made up of a solid top layer of hardwood that is bonded to a floor base, which can consist of either plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF).

engineered Floor Base

Due to Engineered Floor will usually be exposure to various weather conditions and some wet environments, clients not only prioritize the decorative aspect but also emphasize the importance of the durability of Engineered Wood Floor. Therefore, we will address and compare these two types of composite wood materials during our discussion.

The Engineered floor base plywood is constructed from veneers that are bonded together under high pressure, and high-quality engineered boards have a plywood backing that is 14mm or 15mm thick. Subsequently, the engineered floor’s top layer is bonded to the plywood base using high pressure, and the boards undergo kiln drying to maintain balanced moisture content.

In contrast, HDF base is created by grinding wood into sawdust, mixing it with resin, and then compressing it to form an HDF core.

Durability of Plywood vs HDF

In terms of durability, plywood with multiple wood veneer layers is more water-resistant compared to HDF base. Additionally, engineered floor with a thick veneer can last as long as 20 to 50 years, or even longer with proper care. The lifespan of engineered floor HDF base is generally shorter than that of engineered floor plywood base and can last around 15 to 20 years under suitable usage conditions.

Cost Comparison

Regarding cost, engineered floor boards either plywood base or HDF base both will offer a variety of price options based on their quality and branding. However, when comparing equally conditioned, floor base HDF is typically a more affordable material than floor base plywood.

Maintenance Tips

When it comes to maintenance and care, both type of materials require similar cleaning and maintenance practices. Dry brooms or mops are recommended for cleaning. Even, floor base plywood generally offers higher durability compared to HDF base, in the case of water flooding, either type of flooring will likely need to be replaced.
